Socrastein:
Not a big fan of the article, but that's my first impression and I still plan to try some of this stuff first hand. I think if I emphasize thoracic flexion/extension/twisting and work hard to keep the low back and pelvis locked together these could actually be some effective abdominal exercises coupled with some good thoracic mobility drills built in. Gotta say, terrible articles like this are why I love T-Nation though. Lots of perspectives...
Khaine:
(cont) This is just risk:reward to me; if you want to hypertrophy your abs maximally, you need some sort of trunk flexion and extension. Whether that goal is worth the risk of all the hernias and back pain this could lead to is going to be up to the individual. The article should acknowledge this.
Khaine:
@Todd: would you agree though, that this kind of training would lead to more hypertrophy than isometric training? As *strong* as heavy deads and squats will make your abdominals, the lack of any change in length in the fibers throughout the movement means that there won't be much *growth* to speak of. (cont)
Paceman:
This article is weak. All you have done is extend the range of motion of bad exercises.
Sergio Merino:
@MytchBucanan The WTH effect is strong with swings. Swings can have a great influence on the endurance capacity of the lower back but not much in the strength department.
Sergio Merino:
@R Fisher - agreed
