Advice for Getting Back into Strongman

Hey guys! Been reading the forum and learning from the articles for a long time now, finally decided to jump on board the forum because I've got a question that I think can only be answered here.

I want to get back into strongman and actually stand a chance at being competitive.

Back in 2008 I started competing in strongman meets at the tiny size of 155lbs, at 5 foot 11. I'd never trained with weights in my life at that point, all body-weight training. I loved strongman immediately, and that got me jump started on training with weights.

Well after two years of floundering around not having a clue, I got my body weight up to 185lb, and still pretty much sucked at strongman cause for all my trying, I could never press even my own body weight. Deadlift strong, not to much issue with other implements. I'm great at the farmers walk for my size, but pressing? Yeah, not so much.

Then in 2010 I got serious and training with planned intent for two years, got my body wight up to 200lb, and not as lean as i liked, and I still sucked at strongman. I was having difficulty getting my press over 175lb consistently. Everything else was drastically stronger though, but how embarrassing is it to be at the right weight, and can't even move the log off my chest no matter what I tried. It was humiliating.

Last year, 2012, having been utterly frustrated in my inability to press, and not being happy with my not-so-lean self, I gave up, leaned out to a solid 175lb and am going to try my hand at powerlifting this year.

My question is this: I want to keep competing in strongman, but lets face it, no one shows up in the under 175lb class, so I get lumped in with the under 200lb guys. This would be ok if my press was up to snuff, cause I can hold my own in the other events. But I just can't press with them. My best ever press, at a bodyweight of 200lb was 195lb and I barely got that. ALL the pressing in the under 200lb class is over 200lbs, you guys know that, and it's for reps. I just don't stand a chance.

I'm not a top competitor in the other events, I don't pretend to be, but it's fun cause I can perform the feats at the very least. Although with deadlift I was usually in the top three. My first ever strongman meet, having never deadlfited in my life, at a body weight of 155, i pulled 300lb for 14 reps, no straps or belt. Deadlifting is kinda my thing :)

But back to the issue: I was wondering if any one on here had advice for how I could increase my press to the level needed to just be able to have fun at strongman meets. That is, be able to actually press the weight for a handful of reps.

If your curious, I'm stepping over to powerlifting because it's not really that hard to get the squat, deadlift, and bench press up to a level that makes it fun. But the overhead press, why I can't get it to grow is beyond me. Right now I've been excited just to able to press my body weight, barely again, and I'm 175lb!!!!

Please, any advice on this would be VERY appreciated!

Just started doing stones and the tacky I'm using is PR Tacky and it is just hard as a rock. I try and warm it up with warm water, then it comes off in clumps, but it doesn't stay on very well. I've found I get better stick on areas that have had it applied, but it doesn't have any remnants on that part of my palm anymore.
Would I be applying wrong? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

So i was wondering if anybody new some links for example strongman programs involving only classic equipment, not strongman specialized equipment.

My gym that i train at has a squat rack, dumbells that go up to 100lbs, a punching bag a couple of different machines(i never touch the machines) If anyone has some ideas on how to form a strongman training routine, hit me up!

First Contest: How to Prep.

I decided I want to do a contest although I'm not that strong yet. This http://www.nastrongman.com/...0From%20WEB.pdf

will be in my area this summer. I'll be competing as a lightweight novice so none of the weights look too bad. I'm sure I can get at least a rep on everything except for the stones, which I've never done.

I wonder what advice you guys have on preparing for the contest. I've got about 4 months and I just finished my third cycle of 5/3/1 and am on a deload this week. At this point, do you recommend I continue with some cycles of 5/3/1 for general strength or should I start focusing on specific contest prep.

My thoughts on the events:

Axle clean and press: At 185, I figure I should be able to power clean this and shouldn't have to do any messy stuff with a continental and switching my grip. I want to get some fat grips and practice this since I won't have regular access to an actual axle. If I'm going for reps at 185, how heavy should I train? My 1RM is around 210 on the push press right now.

Deadlift: Not much to say here. It's a deadlift. I am pretty weak at the deadlift though, so I could probably only get 3-4 reps right now at this weight. Since it's light, I figure I'll need a lot more to be competitive. Should I just focus on getting a stronger deadlift and figure that will translate to more reps at a lower (but still pretty heavy for me) weight. I'll have to get straps since I've never used straps before.

Sandbag: I've picked a 190lb sandbag up before so I'm pretty sure I'll get 175 off the ground. I figure for this event I should just practice. How heavy should I practice?

Medley: Yoke and prowler. Is there an advantage to going heavier on the yoke so that 500lbs feels lighter?

Stones: I guess I need to get access to some of these for practice. Any good ways to practice in a conventional gym?

4 Day Holiday and Lost 5kgs

Hi, so for the past 3 weeks i've been doing smolov Jr. for my bench and i started the base mesocycle for my squats. Near the end of the 3 weeks, i had 2 sessions to go but i had to go down south with my friend (she came from america and i haven't seen her for years so we went down for some drinks etc..) i ended up getting really drunk and within the 4 days i probably only ate 1 days worth of food. So when i weighed myself i was 116 KGs, after the little 4 day holiday i weighed in at 111.6 KGs.

My question is, should i continue with the program from where im at? im suppose to be doing 1RM tests tomorrow and the day after (Squat, then Bench the next day), then after the 1RMs im moving onto the transition phase for the Full 13 week Smolov program, which is Negative Squats, Power Cleans & Box Squats for 2 weeks. As for my Jr. Smolov, im pretty much finished my first cycle.

SO, i've lost 5kgs in weight from this holiday and im thinking i just wasted 3 weeks of solid training (i was pretty much training every day for 3 weeks; benching or squatting). The werid thing is, today when i walked into the gym, i actually pulled a PB in my OHP. Which was crazy because i've lost so much weight? maybe i've kept some strength along with me which is what im hoping.

What are your thoughts? start over? or stay on track.

Thanks in advance!

(edit), i posted this in the wrong section, should of been in powerlifting xD

Been training for amateur strongman since January, have recently had to give up all contact sports (rugby for 13 years) and have always used the Strongman as an accessory to my gym work for Rugby.

I have long limbs and a short wide torso so my DL is pretty solid, been training it once a week since January with great progress. OHP has recently been getting better but still needs work. My squat is my real weakness.

As my gym whilst at Uni doesn't have strongman equipment I'm building foundational strength to carry over into my events training in the holidays. Does anyone have any tips on getting squats up for people with long legs?
Hello all--

Here are a few videos of the group of guys I've been training for the past few months.

A little background on me: I've been training for a long time--about 20 years. I am/was an elitefts sponsored athlete (my archived log is here: http://asp.elitefts.net/...ons&tid=198 ) and have been competing in amateur strongman for 9 years completely natural. This to me is a hobby rather than a lifestyle, but I get great satisfaction doing it for myself and for the trainees.

Strongman or Powerlifting

So obviously there will be some bias to strongman over here but I'm trying to figure out whether I would like to compete in PL or SM and join SPF or NAS. So I've got a few questions that I'd like to ask and figure out which I may be able to excel at and enjoy the most.

I like the aspect of being more versatile with strongman. Instead of 3 static events, there are many. Also, the deadlift is my bread and butter lift and it seems that will correlate to many events more. Also, I'm 6'1, 210 and in my very little experience watching strongman it seems being taller may be of benefit in some events. My grip isn't the strongest, though, but I've also never trained it directly. I've never dropped a deadlift or anything but then again I'm pulling just over 500.

My only problem is that I'm in PT school. I'm looking at close to $100,000 in debt between me and my wife and I don't have access to most of the implements. The gym at school is free and is a pretty decent gym but doesn't have any strongman equipment. I'm thinking I will buy a elitefts stone trainer to be able to work on something close to stones. Hopefully getting efficient at an Oly C&P will help a little bit but I may be able to find some money sometime to get an axle. There is a gym that is 45 minutes away that has a log. Maybe I can make it there once a month or once every 6 weeks.

So what are some opinions? Obviously to be the top of your potential you need the implements and people with experience around you but I don't have that at my disposal. But can I make due and still improve a fair amount performing DL, F Squat, Z Squat, OH Press, etc...?
